The skill of SELF-REGARD, in the SELF-PERCEPTION realm of emotional intelligence (EQi-2.0 model), refers to respecting oneself while understanding and accepting one's strengths and weaknesses. Self-regard is often associated with feelings of inner strength and self-confidence.
When we reach mature levels of proficiency in this skill we get to experience independence from other people's opinions of our worth and value. Why? Because we already know. We are ahead of any feedback or criticisms they have of our 'weaknesses'. We know them. And we accept ourselves within them. And we work on closing those gaps where it is important to us. And we accept when we might not be able to minimize weaknesses because they are outside of our capacity to achieve (for many reasons). And we love the whole of ourselves because our weaknesses don't diminish our value.
Building our self-regard to achieve independence from other's opinions and hold ourselves in high regard, comes from practices in self-belief...rooted in objectivity. Reality.
